Fibble HD by Crytek

We have reviewed plenty in the past, but sometimes I question the educational value of some puzzle apps. I can understand the need to teach children reflexes and spacial problem solving, but how many of these apps do you need clogging up your phone or tablet. In Fibble HD by Crytek Gmbh you fling the main character (similar to the angry series) to complete stages that remind me of miniature golf.

The game has great illustrations and is beautifully animated. The music is interesting, unique and doesn’t get annoying as quickly as some others would. Unlike the 2D worlds of …

Wee Subs by Wee Taps

Posted in 1st Grade, Kindergarten, Preschool by - May 09, 2013

My daughter loves build a apps. Most of them are riddled with ads or gameplay that forces you to buy coins. Wee Subs by Wee Taps is a build a sub app. You get to pick from multiple parts to build your perfect sub. Then you get a chance to collect fishes and treasures while exploring the sea. You have to also avoid mines and what seem to be toxic drums (although there doesn’t seem a problem if you do hit them).

With beautiful graphics and interesting music, the game is a joy to play with. I also like that the …

Bugaboo Flash Cards by Bugaboo Games

Posted in 1st Grade, 2nd Grade, 3rd Grade by - May 07, 2013

Another educational math game from Bugaboo Games. The app consists of equations that have the missing answer. The child gets to pick the correct answer from the ones presented on the bottom of the screen.

The game has decent graphics and non-irritating sounds effects make this flash card game acceptable. For those that still don’t have a math flash card app, this one could help your child with math facts (especially if they are tested often at school). As for dislikes, I wish the app could track progress for multiple children.

The app is available on the Amazon App, Google Play and …

Kids Sounds by Pyjamas Apps

Posted in 1st Grade, 2nd Grade, Kindergarten, Preschool by - May 01, 2013

Kids Sounds by Pyjamas Apps reminds me of Apple’s GarageBand. But instead of using instruments to make music, you touch items in the scene to make sounds. Some of the objects continue to play the sound after you stop touching them, which allows you and your kids to layer the sounds to create interesting patterns.

The app is beautifully illustrated, and the music that it creates wasn’t annoying (at least for me). My daughter had a great time playing with the two free scenes that come with the app. The in app store requires you to hold your touch over the …

The Treehouse Express By ZuzusTheCat

Posted in 1st Grade, 2nd Grade, Kindergarten, Preschool by - Apr 24, 2013

The Treehouse Express by ZuzusTheCat is a activity/story book app. In the version that I reviewed only one story and one activity is available. But it seems that a second activity and a second story book are in the works (icons appear for both in the app).

The story book is about pirates stealing from each other (with an important lesson in the end). The illustrations (paintings) are quirky and beautiful. I loved the story, and the illustrations. The book is read out loud by a human voice and many of the pages have interactive items. I wish that all pages …

Grade K Math by Study Pad, Inc.

Posted in 1st Grade, Kindergarten, Preschool by - Apr 21, 2013

This is the second app from Study Pad, Inc we review. We reviewed the 3rd grade app before and this educational app is just as good.

As with the first app the illustrations, music, and animations are very well down. It also keeps track of multiple students (a great addition for houses or schools where not every student has an iPad).

I tried this app with my 5-year-old daughter. At least at her age and skill level it is not an app that I can give her and just walk away (slightly advance). But we did have a great time working through …

puppup by Graymedia

I love electronics books and puppup by Graymedia is an excellent example of one. This particular story book follows the adventure of a loved stuffed animal that gets lost at the zoo, and the adventure that follows as he tries to get back to his family.

The story book is beautifully narrated by a human voice. The illustration are unique. The music and sounds are also well done. Although this is not obvious at first glance, most of the scenes include some sort of interactivity. Encourage your children to click around to see what they find.

As far as parts that I …

The Magical Farm (Animal) by TempsRéel3D

Posted in 1st Grade, Kindergarten, Preschool by - Apr 15, 2013

The Magical Farm (Animal) educational app consists of four mini games. The first mini game consists of an introduction of each of the animals as you touch them. In the second mini-game, you hear the animal sound and have to pick the correct animal, the third mini-game you hear the animal name and you have to pick the correct animal, and finally the fourth mini-game consists of a fly through of the farm.

The illustrations are great, but some of the sound effects might get a little annoying after extended play. I love that I can switch the language to French. …

Math Bugaboo by Bugaboo Games

Posted in 1st Grade, 2nd Grade, 3rd Grade, Kindergarten by - Apr 09, 2013

Math Bugaboo is very similar to the game Butterfly Math by the same publisher. Unlike the other game, the subject of this game is creepy crawlers. If you don’t like bugs, stop reading now. The educational part of the app again consists of touching on bugs with numbers (on their backs) to match the result of an equation presented above. The bugs selected leave the screen, and what is left is used for the next problem. Repeat until all or 1 (not enough to answer a question) is left on the screen.

The transition between the levels this time is squashing …

Toca House by Toca Boca

Posted in 1st Grade, Kindergarten, Preschool by - Apr 09, 2013

Toca Boca makes beautifully illustrated and conceived apps (they like to call them toys), Toca House is no exception. Toca House consists of over 15 household activities that your child can carry out by touching, dragging and dropping.

The app is beautiful illustrated. The sounds effects and music are good, but might get annoying after a while (to the parents). All the activities are well conceived and all of them can be figured out by the child exploring. I love that the app rewards exploring, and that not all the activities are obvious or spelled out.

I reviewed it on my …
